This practice is refered to in the industry as Caller ID Spoofing. For example: Your caller ID indicates you are receiving a call from 217-659-4567. You answer and either no one is there, or they are attempting to sell you goods or services. When you attempt to redial the number on your caller ID, a recording states that the number is disconnected. Many telemarketer and telesurveyors are masking their true caller ID and inserting fictitious local numbers to avoid consumers screening their calls. While this practice has been around for several years, it seems to have increased with the development of Voice over IP (VOIP) telephone services. We would like to remind the customers of La Harpe Telephone that the only legitimate local numbers are: 217-659-3xxx, 217-659-7xxx, 217-659-8xxx, 217-659-9xxx, 217-654-2xxx, and 217-654-3xxx. 7.24.2007 Did you know that La Harpe Telephone Company supports our community by sponsoring the LaHarpe Telephone Company Scholarship for area high school seniors?
